It was more than half a century ago, in 1966, when the linguist Pit Corder made the distinction between “talking about images” (the focus is on the simple description) and “talking with images” (responding personally to visual input). Since then, there has been much research in how to promote the critical and creative use of images in language classes by helping students to delve deeper into the universe that the image provides while exploiting this opportunity to understand their own feelings and personal reactions to the visual elements.

Education in the 21st century

In the 21st century, it has been made obvious that one of the educational priorities should be to teach the students to be active viewers in a world full of powerful images that bombard them daily. Although the power of images to stimulate ideas and meaningful conversations is undeniable, little use has been made of this medium in traditional coursebooks. The majority of them, unfortunately, haven’t yet been able to provide a wide range of visual input for the students and many of the photos have a merely decorative role.

Multiliteracies pedagogy and visual literacy

Images could be used as an educational tool to cultivate visual literacy and should be exploited as multimodal texts paving the way for teachers to focus on “multiliteracies pedagogy”. According to recent scientific research, literacy should be approached not as isolated sets of skills but as a web of contexts and technology. Using the competencies of visual literacy (the term was coined by J. Debes in 1969), people are able to interpret the objects, actions and symbols in their environment. Through the creative use of these skills, we are able to communicate with others. We not only acquire the abilities to understand (read) and to use (write) images, but also we learn to think in terms of images.

A shift in the traditional skills

In some countries the traditional set of skills of reading-writing-listening-speaking has been enriched with the addition of two new skills, those of “viewing” and “visually representing”. On the one hand, “viewing” requires students to construct meaning by interpreting the images and everything they incorporate (symbols, conventions, contexts). In this way they learn to “decode” the image and on top of that they get an insight into the methods the creator or artist has employed to promote their viewpoint. On the other hand, “representing” enables learners to communicate their ideas visually using a variety of media at their disposal.

Where can we find images for the lessons?

A number of sources can be used to find images appropriate for language classes of all ages and levels. Social media tools like Pinterest and Instagram, memes, advertisements, paintings, classic works of art, photos of current issues or general social topics and many more can be harnessed to enhance language learning.

Related activities

We can start with the spontaneous contact with the image. We present the visual input to the students asking them a set of questions to help them investigate the image and the related text if there is any. Quotation cards and memes are good examples of text-image combinations. The aim is to cultivate their critical thinking by examining the multiple dimensions and points of view of the image. The basic stages go from the simple observation questions (Who? What? Where? When? Why do you say this?) to the more complex ones that will help the learners understand their feelings and reactions by making comparisons and drawing conclusions.

I usually follow the line of questions below, especially if we are using a combination of text and images (you can download a pdf of these questions here). The value of these activities is that there are no right or wrong answers, students should be strongly encouraged to express their ideas freely with no fear of judgement.

First look at the image and try to answer : Who is pictured here ? What are they doing ? Where are they? When is this happening?

What makes you say that?

How does this make you feel? Do you understand why? What personal associations do you have?

Do you like the image and why?

What methods has the creator used to get their message across?

Have these methods been successful?

What would you like to tell the creator or to do differently?

Now read the text (quote or meme or something different maybe) and try to answer:

Are there any words you don’t know?

Can you tell us in your own words what you think this means?

Why do you think that? What are the elements that you used to reach this conclusion?

Do you agree with the idea expressed by the author? Why?

How does this make you feel? What personal connections do you have with the idea presented here?

What methods has the writer used to convey the message? Were they successful?

Do you find any connections between the written text and the image?

Would you like to add anything else?

Post lesson activities

Writing stories, dialogues, poems and letters in response to visual works of art is a practice adopted by many language educators around the globe. The storytelling capacity of images has been well discussed and scientifically proven. We could ask the students to elaborate on the ideas expressed in class or write a text based on a character, a different perspective or the feelings that the image has managed to ignite. Luckily, there is a large range of material available to appeal to all ages and kinds of students. Images are differentiated and engaging material that help students grow as they see, analyze and evaluate visual texts. The more we use images in the language lessons, the richer the experience for everyone involved.

The Ruthless Teacher, Charisi Giolanta

The use of works of art of high aesthetic value is proposed as an excellent method in the context of transformative learning. The work of art is studied alongside the content of any given subject (Language, History, Technology, Physics and so on) and is used for a more enriched and open to interpretation approach to the subject under consideration. By discovering the work of art our thinking becomes deeper, more analytical, going beyond the obvious, becoming more careful considering multiple factors. When learners have incentives to speak, write, or draw their ideas, they deepen their cognition and understanding of the world. More importantly, they develop problem-solving skills which can be used for subjects across the curriculum.

The "Visible Thinking" approach
For a few decades now the Harvard University has been working on the Project Zero and an approach which is called “Visible Thinking”. What this approach suggests is that educators can help students make thinking visible by following a set of routines during the lesson, a small sequence of steps and structures, e.g. See-Think-Wonder, Think-Pair-Share, Think-Puzzle-Explore and many more. The visible thinking approach creates a culture of observation and reflection and instills the need for justification. Being able to think creatively, critically and deeply is a fundamental skill.

Using art masterpieces to enhance visible thinking is considered extremely beneficial as it sharpens students’ awareness and ignites inclusive discussions. The artwork presents the ideas and feelings of the artist, but these are filtered by us, the viewers, and are often interpreted based on our own ideas and feelings. One of the basic characteristics of art is that not all observers have the same reactions. The works invite us on an adventure of understanding that often goes beyond the original goals of the creator and becomes one with the understanding of our own feelings and values contributing to metacognition.

The aim of this kind of activity is not to teach Art History and specific details about the artists and art movements but to use the works of art as a tool for the cultivation of critical thinking. This practically means that you don’t have to be an expert to try this method, there is a wide range of material online that you can use to suit the specific needs of your lesson and students.
How does this method work in practice?
The first stage consists of the learners' initial spontaneous contact with the work of art that the teacher or the whole class has chosen. At this stage the educator asks a series of questions that will help the participants to investigate the work in depth, revealing its multiple dimensions and cultivating their critical thinking.

In the beginning, the teacher poses the observation questions. These questions aim to encourage learners' impressions of the artwork and are categorized as “open and adventurous observation”. During this stage, simple basic questions that can be applied to different works and art genres could be used, such as: what, who, where, when, why. In the next phase, there is the investigation of the story and the search for emotions. Moreover, students can look for the elements of surprise in the art work.

Next comes the stage of “analytical and deep observation”. At this point the students in collaboration with the teacher try to give their own answers by returning to the previous questions explaining and documenting their opinions. The goal in this phase is to draw more general conclusions. Here the participants can return to the surprises of the work and try to interpret them as well as investigate the way in which the artists express their ideas. Learners are invited to go beyond superficial observation and delve deeper into the work of art by utilizing their previous knowledge, experiences and imagination by comparing the work of art with contemporary reality.

In the last stage the educator asks creative questions, this is the “holistic observation/ review of the process” phase. The students reflect on the project bearing in mind the experience of the previous phases. The teacher's goal at this point is to help them advance their critical reflection on issues that go beyond the particular work of art but with this work as a starting point. And of course the ultimate goal is transformative learning which represents the re-evaluation of the beliefs of the learners on the occasion of the work of art and through the aesthetic experience this offered.

Multiple benefits for students
In addition to the benefits regarding the cognitive approach, the use of Art masterpieces in class enhances students’ creativity, emotional expression and empathy, and last but not least it promotes the search for alternative perspectives. All these are activated at the same time, contributing to the holistic development of their personality. These strategies are especially engaging and they motivate students by increasing attention and keeping them focused in the present.

Πως επηρεάζουν οι προηγούμενες αρνητικές εμπειρίες;

This is by far the most popular educational technique for classes of all subjects. It consists of the spontaneous expression of the students’ views on a specific question posed by the teacher. It is advisable to write the question on the board (either for face-to-face lessons or on a whiteboard for online lessons) so that it can be directly referenced by the participants throughout the process. Learners give short answers orally which are also noted on the board by the educator. The answers, which are completely spontaneous and do not require knowledge of the subject, aim to contribute to the multifaceted examination of the issue.

Benefits of 'brainstorming"
This technique has, in my opinion, excellent advantages, the main of which I would say is the high degree of participation in the process as it engages the majority of students. Being able to freely express their ideas without the fear of right and wrong answers during the first stage of the process enables them to express their thoughts openly and free of judgment. But also justification and critical reflection during the second and deeper stage gives the motivation for finding and organizing their arguments, justifying their beliefs while cooperating, accepting or politely disagreeing with the opinions of others.

The teachers' role
The experience of the teachers regarding the whole process plays a catalytic role as they are the ones who can schedule the duration of the activity so that the first stage is not time-consuming but also they provide guidelines for the organization and justification in the second and most important stage of the process. The fact that opposing views are expressed is by no means negative for the participants. As far as I am concerned, this is the very point of “brainstorming” , exposing students to different sides of an issue and investigating it through various prisms with the goal of a fruitful dialogue.

Ignite the imagination
Some educators have talked about the danger of "storming into a show of imagination". This is certainly not a problem in language or creative writing classes. On the contrary, it is precisely why “brainstorming” is chosen as a technique to activate the imagination and motivate participants more creatively. So, I would say that the subject matter in addition to the experience of the teachers play an important role in the successful outcome of this technique.
